Swimming is one of Australia’s most popular pastimes, and for good reason. There’s no better feeling than the feeling of complete weightlessness, floating in the water.

To pay homage to this great sport we’ve found four fun swimming facts you might not have heard before.

1. Freestyle actually means “free style”.

In freestyle races, swimmers are subject to very limited restrictions on their stroke. This means you are free to choose whichever stroke you’d like. However, ‘freestyle’ as we know it (known as the ‘front crawl’) is the most popular stroke as it is generally the fastest.

2. Swimming has been part of the Olympics since 1896.

Australia’s first swimming representative was Frederick Lane in the 1900 games.

3. Australia has won 178 swimming medals at Olympic Games.

57 of those were gold!

4. The purpose of the lane line is to dissipate energy.

Lanes aren’t just there to give swimmers their own space. Its main purpose is to dissipate energy between lanes.
